Sourcing Colors

  • I think we have a chicken/egg problem re: wikipedia's article on Columbia blue. The article calls that color Columbia blue, and cites the graphic as the source for it being the official Columbia blue. Circular, see? I think the author just figured that whatever the blue on that ubiquitous graphic must be the official color. What's funny is that the text of the article which refers to the trademarked color, is a direct contradiction. Absentminded 00:56, 2 April 2008 (EDT)
  • Hmmm, yes.  − Reaganaut  00:59, 2 April 2008 (EDT)

Sparring between Absentminded and MOPH

Really, absentminded?

The school's acknowledgement of this is how we know. Give us admin some credit.

Where? Rob Taylor was amazed to learn of the fact when I told him last thursday. Absentminded 12:25, 1 April 2007 (EDT) (And I've been wondering when you'd show up.)
I'm looking for it--I remember checking this on a University website when I first found out. -moph
Found it! "A History of Columbia University: 1754-1904", published by CU Press for the 150th anniversary has it on page 93. And yes, I have a 100-year-old history of the school on my bookshelf. -moph
  • Well done. E. A. Cardozo's history of Philolexian, which mentions that the administration hasn't officially acknowledged it was published two years prior in 1902.
  • So you're using 105-year-old rant to complain about us? Sheesh.
  • You used a 103 year old book to cover your butt. Sheesh. And as it is... I refuted your point "The school's acknowledgement of this is how we know."
  • Touche. Should have been "how I know." I don't have the Cardozo book. Edit: Moph 10:56, 2 April 2007 (EDT)

So props to the historian for catching that. Perhaps admins would do well to read those musty tomes and catch up on columbia lore? Absentminded 20:05, 1 April 2007 (EDT)

  • I am an administrator and did read that particular musty tome. So there. Why on earth would you want any administrator who's actually important taking their time to read 103-year-old books? On second thought, don't answer that. Moph 23:51, 1 April 2007 (EDT)
  • I'll just dodge the point- you're clearly not the common administrator. "Matt Harrison (C '05) and Michael "Novi" Novielli (C '03), both former CCSC Presidents work for Student Services, lending credence to the rumor that the administration maintains a strict policy of assimilating any students who actually figure out how the bureaucracy functions rather than let that knowledge circulate in the general population." Now stop being so defensive, and go edit the SS related pages. Shoo. Move along now. Absentminded 00:03, 2 April 2007 (EDT)
Also, I resent that you call Robert Taylor an administrator.
  • Also, you can read it on Google eBooks here. Ttan 12:33, 1 April 2007 (EDT)
  • This can't be right. It says it's Peithologian Blue and Philolexian White... Ttan 12:35, 1 April 2007 (EDT)
  • Typical administration.... Absentminded 20:05, 1 April 2007 (EDT)
  • Or typically Philo. 23:51, 1 April 2007 (EDT)
  • Nope. We definitely got the blue correct. Of course it's not like the administration has anything like this: http://www.unc.edu/about/traditions.html It just has a musty century old tome that most of the officers probably havent read. Of course, we've already discussed the requirements of getting anything changed on the Columbia website. Apparently it required convening a university-wide panel of administrators.
  • I'd bet that making substantive changes to the homepage of any major University requires convening a university-wide panel of administrators. Edit: Moph 10:56, 2 April 2007 (EDT)
  • Matthew Harrison, please sign your posts with a quadruple tilde. Ttan 10:47, 2 April 2007 (EDT)
  • I'm learning, Tao. Slowly but surely. Moph 10:56, 2 April 2007 (EDT)
