Columbia University Libraries (CUL) is one of the top five academic research library systems in North America. The collections include over 10 million volumes, over 100,000 journals and serials, as well as extensive electronic resources, rare books and manuscripts, microforms, maps, graphic and audio-visual materials, and the university archives. The services and collections are organized into 25 libraries and various academic technology centers. The Libraries employs more than 550 professional and support staff.
Columbia's primary library is Butler Library, which houses the humanities and history collections. Other disciplines are located in other buildings throughout campus. The centerpiece of campus is Low Library, which only served as a library from 1897 until Butler's completion in 1934.
