Imannuel Wallerstein CC '51 MA '54 PhD '59 is an influential sociologist who first developed world-systems theory. On the Columbia faculty until 1971, he participated in the Ad Hoc Faculty Committee that attempted to resolve the 1968 protests. Later, Wallerstein categorized 1968 as part of a "world revolution", the occurrence of which marked the end of mainstream liberalism. He currently teaches at Yale.
