Charles Van Doren MA '47 PhD '55 was the son of notable Columbia professor Mark Van Doren and the source of the Quiz Show scandal in 1959. He earned a liberal arts degree from St. John's College, where the curriculum is a derivation of the Columbia Core, and then moved to Columbia to study for a masters in astroyphysics. He completed his PhD in English, however.

The Quiz Show scandal, in which it was revealed that Van Doren had had answers fed to him in order to go on a winning streak on a television quiz show, led to his resignation - and his father's resignation as well.
